WESTFIELD – The COVID-19 pandemic has constantly changed the lives of most people.

For Tom Delcamp, this has resulted in him being a CrossFit certified trainer who is about to open his gym where he will train people in functional fitness.

Delcamp’s new store will be called Westwind Functional Fitness and will be located at 60 Nichols Ave. located in Westfield. Delcamp, a Westfield resident, began training people around his home shortly after the pandemic caused local gyms to close.

“I trained at the Dunkirk CrossFit gym for four to five years and then COVID came and everything was shut down.” he said. “So I decided to give classes at my home in Westfield with people I had trained and trained with. It started with three to four people. Then I got my Level One certified coach from CrossFit. Then the class went to eight to ten people a night. A month later it turned into two lessons per night. “

Given the popularity of the class, Delcamp decided to lease a 3,100 square foot industrial building about half a mile from his home. He said functional fitness is about improving mobility.

“It’s about teaching people how to move properly and functionally in the right form. We spend a short time doing some activities like stretching and stability work in a group forum. Then every lesson we will have a technique or a strengthening part, such as learning the correct deadlift. “ he said. “It’s about learning how to move properly, and it increases the heart rate and the blood flows.”

The opening times depend on the available courses. Delcamp said classes that represent a cardio fitness workout will be held Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6:30 am to 7:30 am. In addition, courses take place from Monday to Friday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. During the afternoon classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the training session will be an experienced functional fitness class. During the afternoon classes on Tuesday and Thursday, the session will be a beginner’s class in functional fitness.

Delcamp said he had been working on improving the interior of the building for the past eight months.

“It’s an old factory building. It was in really bad shape when I started working on it. Between the owner and me we redesigned the inside of my portion. “ he said.

During Labor Day soft opening, Delcamp said there will be a free Basic Functional Fitness class every hour on the hour that people can take by signing a waiver.

“To be honest, it’s a passion that I have when training a handful of people.” he said. “It has to be a passion to do all the work I’ve done. I wouldn’t have done it if I hadn’t had a passion for it. “
