LACROFT – A fire early Thursday evening is being investigated by the State Fire Marshal.
Liverpool Township Fire Chief Dave Ward declined to reveal the name of a death victim at 612 Ninth Avenue on Friday evening, citing uncertainty as to whether her entire family had already been notified.
Community fire teams responded to the 600 block on Ninth Avenue around 6 p.m. Thursday due to a trapped kitchen fire and requested additional tankers and workers from neighboring departments upon arrival. The three-bedroom, one-bath home owned by June McVay was on fire with heavy smoke, according to Columbiana County’s online property records. Calcutta, Glenmoor and Wellsville provided mutual assistance on the ground while East Liverpool firefighters covered the Liverpool Township station.
Ward said there was a female family member in the apartment when a fire broke out on the stove in the kitchen. The victim’s daughter reportedly tried to put out the fire for her immobile mother and was burned. She ran out of the house and was taken to East Liverpool City Hospital for treatment and then to a burn ward in Pittsburgh. Ward said there was no information on the daughter’s condition as of Friday night.
Although the Columbiana County coroner was called to the scene, the elderly victim will not be autopsied due to his advanced age.
The State Fire Marshal also responded to the scene Thursday night as it was a death.
Ward described the house, which was valued by the auditor at $ 44,100, as “A total loss”.
