Middlesex County added six new pickleball courts in Thompson Park in Monroe Township / Jamesburg
Middlesex County opened new recreational and exercise facilities in two county parks. The additions include six new pickleball courts in Thompson Park in Monroe Township and Jamesburg, as well as a new outdoor fitness track in William Warren Park in Woodbridge Township.
“The new pickleball courts and fitness track are excellent additions to these parks,” said Charles E. Tomaro, Middlesex County’s agent, in a prepared statement. “We pride ourselves on our county parks and the opportunities they offer Middlesex County’s residents to enjoy the great outdoors. We hope these new offers at Thompson Park and William Warren Park will bring even more residents to our parks. “
In addition, the sports fields in Spring Lake Park in South Plainfield have been redesigned.
Pickleball courts
Pickleball, one of the fastest growing sports in the US, was founded in 1965 and combines many of the elements tennis, badminton and table tennis. The six new pickleball courts in Thompson Park were created from two former tennis courts, according to a statement.
The courts open at sunrise and are equipped with lights so that the game can continue until 10 p.m.
The new pickleball courts are part of a major renovation of the sports fields at Thompson Park, the largest developed park in the Middlesex County Park System.
According to the statement, the renovation work also included the renewal and renovation of two tennis courts, four basketball courts and a handball court.
Fitness circuit
At William Warren Park, the new fitness course includes a 17-station outdoor training course. Visitors to the park can choose between a stationary bike or an elliptical trainer for cardio training, a bench or pull-up bar for strength training, or the cargo climber or high stepper for flexibility.
The fitness racetrack is equipped with a rubber safety surface to cushion the effects of a workout.
The equipment is cleaned and disinfected daily. However, it is recommended that visitors protect themselves by bringing hand sanitizer or wipes to be used during exercise.
Warren Park and the fitness trail are open from sunrise to sunset.
Visitors are advised to check with their doctor before beginning a new exercise plan.
Sports fields
In addition, Spring Lake Park in South Plainfield now offers refreshed tennis and basketball courts. The county has resurfaced four tennis courts, with two of the courts double-lined so that they can be used for both pickleball and tennis. Although these are not special pickleball courts, they say they offer park visitors the opportunity to play tennis or pickleball on these two courts.
The pickleball courts, fitness area and refreshed sports fields are available to all residents and visitors of Middlesex County.
Park visitors are encouraged to practice social distancing and it is highly recommended that they wear a mask while enjoying county parks and outdoor areas.
