When Shelia Johnson, 52, was diagnosed with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, she went straight to the kitchen. It was a way for her to post, create, and show gratitude, and it led her to create a popular YouTube cooking show.

Growing up in a black home, the kitchen was a connecting place for Johnson’s family, and dinner was all about socializing, building, and communicating. However, after Johnson’s diagnosis, her daughter helped realize the importance of the quality of the food she was putting into her body, and she began to experiment more with healthier foods.

“I really believe that someone who eats live foods and has the strength to give your body the minerals and vitamins it needs – I mean, where could we go wrong?” Johnson tells SurvivorNet. “We can’t go wrong, you know?”

To share what she has learned with others, she launched the YouTube cooking channel and the Gangsta Goodies Kitchen website.

She says even collard greens can be healthy.

“I grew up on Collard Greens,” Johnson tells SurvivorNet. “My mother was from the south, and Collard Greens either had neck bones or fat backs or ham sprouts or something like that when I was growing up. Now I have it like this, every blue moon, maybe two or three times a year. But for the most part, I put Collard Greens in a wok. I cook them about five or ten minutes, add a few spices, no salt, and then the amount, they are amazed at how good they are, you know, without that meat, I think yes we don’t need all of it that to have good collard greens. “
