It wasn’t exactly a sweet start.
In fact, Virginia Fortchimo’s baking career began with a flop.
“I baked a cake for my mother. It looked like a child had made it, ”says Forchimo. “She said to me, ‘Thanks, but I knew I could do better.'”
Things have obviously improved.
Fortchimo’s cakes were featured in the Greatest Baker competition, reaching the semi-finals in 2020 and the quarter-finals in 2021. The competition relies on the dynamics of the internet to win. The winner of the competition will be featured in Bake by Scratch Magazine and will receive an annual supply of filled puffs and $ 20,000.
“I’ll be back next year,” said Forchimo.
Meanwhile, Fortchimo is opening The Cake Lady this week at MJ Hair’s former home in downtown Bruce Mines, with a grand opening for later this summer.
Fortchimo’s favorite cake was one that looked like Star Wars baby Yoda, but her specialty is cakes that look like other foods.
“For Thanksgiving, I made cakes that looked like ham and some like a turkey,” she says. “I also made sandwiches and bread.”
Forchimo enjoys seeing her in the desert area of the table. One of their most popular items is Smash Cakes.
“We are so lucky to have this great talent in our area,” said Mike Peever, president of the Bruce Mines Chamber of Commerce. “She brings a level of professionalism to her craft that sets her apart. I am very happy to expand my waistline. “
The Cake Lady is a family-oriented company. Fortchimo’s mother is a co-owner of S&S Creations and works in Puddingstone, her grandmother is a wildlife artist who works on stone frequently, and her son, DJ, is interested in becoming a baker. Husband Mario is the official taste tester and supporter.
The renovation work has been completed and a thorough cleaning of the new location has begun.
