ONnot least! A clear call from India Knight to return home economics to the national curriculum (Commentary, last week). Since the subject was dropped in the 1970s, many child cohorts have not been taught the basics of food preparation, nutrition and handicrafts. Result: hordes of obese people addicted to junk food and unable to mend their clothes or prepare a simple nutritious meal.
Even if the decision is made to reintroduce the subject this year, it will be years before it is taught properly again. Most of those with experience teaching home economics or home economics have retired or have died. We must start now to train a new generation of teachers.
