Clavering: flowers, greens and cooking on the present

After the Clavering Horticultural Society committee canceled their annual show in 2020, they wanted to host a free reduced show for the village this year.

And the committee members hoped there would be an appetite to attend.

You were not disappointed.

Loyal supporters attended more than 270 flower, vegetable, and cooking classes, and a steady stream of people came for tea and cake.

Elizabeth Balaam won the Children’s Cup for most points in the children’s section and the Enid Jones Cup for the children’s arrangement.

Sarah Blackaby won the Thurrocks Trophy for the miniature arrangement and second place in cooking for the points; Veronica Gilbert received an award in the kitchen; Most of the items in the cooking department went to Jenny Milledge. WI cookery judge Rosemary Green was enthusiastic about the high standards.

Nigel Wood took the Sweet Pea Cup, the Secretary’s Cup for the outstanding flower and the Derek Dimmock plate for the bean section.

Mrs. Maine’s memorial bowl for the rose department was shared by Angela Bailey and Anne Rivett.

There was a points battle between Robert Abrahams and Andy Johns.

Robert Abrahams won the Mrs Finzel Bowl, most points in the flower section, and the Mrs Talks Cup for best vegetables on the show.

Andy Johns won the Fred and Queenie Whyman Memorial Trophy for most points in the salad department, the Luff Cup for most points in the vegetable department, and the Clavering Cup for most points on the show.

Robin Carlsberg, the vegetable and flower judge, was very impressed with the standard and number of entries.

Chaiman Richard Bailey thanked sponsors The Easy Chair and Sofa Company and Poppy’s Barn Tea Room along with everyone who made the show a success.

The yew flower farm kindly donated a wonderful selection of flowers to us for auction.
