Our life is closely linked to gadgets and the digital world. Hands up if you’re one of those who can live a day without your wallet but not without your smartphone? The benefits of always having the world at hand come with a price, one of which is poor eye health. Take it upon yourself to make sure your eyes stay healthy. Here are some lifestyle changes you can make to protect your eyes.

Tip 1: adjust the settings of your computer and smartphone

One of the main causes is how the blue light affects our health and wellbeing. The Journal of Korean Medical Science noted that “constant or excessive exposure to blue light can cause unintended retinal damage from oxidative stress.” Counteract this by limiting screen time, especially right before bed. Go to the drop-down menu and turn on the blue light filter on your Android smartphone. For Macs, click System Preferences, Ads, Night Shift and adjust them based on your usage.

For iPhone users, go to Settings> Accessibility> Display and Text Size> Color Filters> Color Tint. Once you’re down to the text size, toggle to find an ideal font size so you don’t have to squint again. Then use the color filter accessibility option to filter out the blue and green color spectra from your iPhone display.

Tip 2: Eat Your Way to Healthy Eyes

There’s nothing like a balanced diet, but our lifestyles may not allow us to get enough of the right nutrients from the foods we eat. Fortify your peepers with nutrients like blueberries, zeaxanthin, ginkgo, and lutein that are known to be good for the eyes. Because these ingredients are fat soluble, you can get the most out of them by eating these supplements with foods that contain healthy fats such as olive oil, oily fish, or nuts.

Tip 3: Fit into a daily eye exercise

Just as our bodies need rest and exercise, so will our eyes benefit from physical activity. During your work day, make a goal of taking regular breaks and staring into the distance, preferably to look at the greens. Make a habit of doing some simple eye workouts that you can take anywhere. Try these three methods.

(I) Close your eyes

Squeeze your eyes firmly and quickly open them wide, then repeat several times.

(ii) The eye roll

Sit up straight, look ahead, and keep your shoulders relaxed. Time to get your eyeballs rolling! Just use your eyeballs to look right and up, then left, then down. Roll your eyes in a circular motion. Aim for 10 repetitions twice a day. It should take less than a minute each time.

(iii) Palm Eye Exercise

How to reset your eyes. Run your palms over the eye socket for 30 seconds (make sure they are clean!). It is best to rub your palms together to warm them beforehand. The heat in your hands helps the eye muscles relax further. Repeat once or twice. Slowly open your eyes and blink as your eyes focus again.

These eye exercises strengthen and relieve your eye muscles. The goal is to do them daily.

Tip 4: Pamper your eye area

The skin around our eyes is fragile and requires extra attention. Make a habit of using an antiaging eye cream along with a moisturizing eye patch two to three times a week for best results.

Tip 5: make sure you have the ideal place to work

Position your computer screen so it is 20 to 24 inches from your eyes. The center of the screen should be about 10 to 15 degrees below your eyes for comfortable head and neck positioning. No standing desk? Just use a box or thick book to get your laptop up to the ideal height. Also, watch out for reflective screens that can injure your eyes. Draw the curtains to reduce glare or install an anti-glare lens on your smartphone or laptop.

Tip 6: hydrate your eyes

Sometimes our eyes cry out for some moisture, especially in air-conditioned places. Always bring a cooling eye drop to counteract dry eyes. This is compact enough to fit in the smallest handbag. You will never have an excuse not to take it everywhere.

Tip 7: Schedule annual eye exams

Can’t remember when your last eye exam was? Why not get an eye exam on your birthday month? That way, you’ll never forget your eye doctor appointment or any other important check-up you should be doing.

Tip 8: Protect the sun’s rays with shadows or hats

Make a habit of wearing sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of harmful UVA and UVB radiation. Get your favorite glasses or headwear at Farfetch’s Designer Sale, buy Mytheresa’s Luxury Sale or Ssense. In addition to protecting your eyes, putting on sunglasses or hats will also help avoid fine lines around your eyes in the long run.

Tip 9: get enough sleep

Have you experienced double vision and poor eyesight after pulling a late nighter? Insufficient sleep can lead to eye conditions such as dry eyes, sensitivity to light, itching, redness, or blurred vision. Prolonged sleep deprivation can also make eye problems even more serious. Try drinking warm milk or chamomile tea before bed. Still having trouble falling asleep? Try these natural herb supplements to lull you into dreamland.
